1.0 Introduction and Purpose of Project Manual

In 1997 representatives from Powelton Village and Drexel University joined forces and, with management help from The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Philadelphia Green Program (PG), obtained a grant from The William Penn Foundation for the preparation and implementation of a comprehensive greening plan to benefit both communities. This Project Manual is the final product of a two year planning and design process - the Powelton*Drexel Community Greening and Action Plan (Community Greening Project) - undertaken as a result of the grant. Interim products including reports, drawings, memos, etc. are referenced herein and are available for review at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS).

The purpose of this Project Manual is:
* to review the planning and design process;
* to describe the projects that were implemented;
* to identify funding resources and stewardship models;
* to define the next steps, potential areas for improvement, and future projects; and,
* to provide guidelines for the ongoing evaluation and maintenance of installed projects.

This Project Manual was prepared to be used by the Powelton*Drexel community as a sourcebook as other projects identified during the Community Greening Project come to life. It is the hope of all who have been involved in the process to-date that the energy and enthusiasm of the collaboration between Powelton Village and Drexel University will continue and thrive in the future.
