3.0 Project Partners and their Roles
Over
the years, the built environment and students of Drexel University have become integral
to Powelton Village. While there has been tension between Powelton Village's permanent
residents and the Drexel University community, in 1997 representatives from the two
groups united to write a grant proposal to The William Penn Foundation for a comprehensive
greening
plan that would benefit both communities.
The grant was administered by Drexel University. PG acted
as Project Manager and advisor to a Steering Committee composed of a select group
of representatives from both Powelton Village and Drexel University. A larger Greening
Committee representing a wide range of institutional, commercial, and residential
community interests was organized to work closely with the selected consultants-Lager*Raabe
Landscape Architects, Inc. and Kise Straw & Kolodner (Design Team)-and the other
participants in the preparation of the Powelton*Drexel Community Greening and Action
Plan.
Additionally the Greening
Committee's role was to foster a dialogue among the
diverse community groups during the planning process, to generate issues to be addressed
in the plan, to advocate greening in the community, and to establish a model for
continued collaboration among the participants in the future. The Greening Committee
began meeting monthly in October 1998. The Design Team attended these meetings periodically
beginning in November 1998. A complete list of the participating individuals and
their affiliations is listed in Appendix 9.1.
