4.0 Project Goals

The mission of the Community Greening Project was to enhance and improve the quality of the neighborhood through greening efforts and improvements to the physical environment. It was also the mission of the project to include the broadest range of stakeholders possible in the planning, design, and implementation process.

To achieve the project mission the Design Team set four primary goals:
· To inventory and analyze existing open space and community resources.
· To identify opportunities for physical improvements and community participation.
· To develop recommendations for greening projects and strategies for stewardship.
· To prioritize projects for implementation and prepare design concepts, a management plan and order of magnitude costs for top priority projects.

The Design Team identified four activities to accomplish the goals of the Powelton*Drexel Community Greening and Action Plan. Activity One-Inventory and Analysis was completed in April 1999. Activity Two began with the presentation of the Existing Conditions and Site Analysis plans at the Community Open House on May 4, 1999 and was completed in September 1999 with the selection of priority projects. Activities Three and Four were combined to run concurrently and concluded with the completion of the implementation of the first priority project and the submission of this Project Manual in June 2000.

In addition to completing the Powelton*Drexel Community Greening and Action Plan, the installation of several easily identifiable and prominently located Early Action Projects, (Appendix 9.2) to generate community interest, was an important goal of the Greening Committee. These projects sited throughout the community were selected, designed, and implemented by the Greening Committee and PG during the term of the grant.
