5.2.1 Recommendations from Activity Two

The process for project selection and vote tally was presented to the Steering Committee at their September meeting. Due to budget constraints, and the revelation that the 32nd Street traffic island was already slated for use as a gateway by Drexel, it was determined that only one improvement project would be implemented with the initial grant funding. The Tot Lot on the northeast corner of Powelton Avenue and 35th Street was selected as the priority implementation project. This site, one of the few open green spaces in the neighborhood, is highly visible and centrally located. The site is owned by Drexel and has been used for play activities for many years by children from Powelton, the Powel School, Mantua and other neighborhoods as well as Drexel students and other neighbors. The Steering Committee advised PG to secure approval from the owner of the site before the Design Team began schematic design.

PG coordinated obtaining approval for the use of the Tot Lot site and the Design Team began contacting stakeholders to determine how a redesign would best meet the needs of the diverse users. The results of completed stakeholder interviews were presented to the Greening Committee at the December 1999 meeting.
